CGIAROctober 2015: The CGIAR Consortium has made available a series of videos in which representatives of CGIAR centers, programmes and partners discuss their research in light of the theme of World Food Day 2015, ‘Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty.’

In 12 video clips, senior scientists, directors and program leaders of the CGIAR’s international agricultural research centers address key challenges faced by rural communities and how measures of social protection can help them.

The videos cover a broad range of research areas relevant for social protection, including: the importance of water for social protection; social protection for food security and livelihoods; different types of insurance schemes such as weather insurance, livestock insurance and index insurance; agricultural policies for social protection; and the impact of agricultural machinery for social protection.

Originally broadcast live on Periscope, the broadcast application of Twitter, during the week leading up to World Food Day, the video clips are now available on the CGIAR website and the CGIAR YouTube channel. World Food Day is celebrated each year on 16 October, marking the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in 1945 to eradicate hunger and malnutrition around the world. The CGIAR Consortium and its international agricultural research centers contribute to efforts to tackle poverty, hunger, major nutrition imbalances and environmental degradation.
