CEPREDENAC Engages Communicators on Disaster Risk Management

The Coordination Center for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC) convened a meeting with journalists and communications professionals to explore their role in integrated disaster risk management.

10 June 2012: The Central American Integration System’s (SICA) Coordination Center for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC) convened a meeting for journalists and other communicators from Central American countries to discuss their role in integrated disaster risk reduction (DRR) and management.

The meeting, which took place on 10 June 2012, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, brought together 40 communicators under the theme “The Role of Communications Institutions in the Culture of Risk Prevention.”

The meeting was part of the implantation of the Regional Communications Strategy adopted by the CEPREDENAC Council of Representatives. Specifically, it sought to promote sharing of knowledge, experiences and reflections among communications professionals on the opportunities and roles for communications institutions in integrated DRR and management. Specific topics addressed included “advances in the creation and implementation of national communication strategies” and “basic tools of information and communications management” for risk management.

Ivan Morales, CEPREDENAC Executive Secretary, stressed the importance of communications in ensuring that the public is well-informed, and urged participants to propose their own solutions and alternatives to communicating disaster risks and the public’s role in disaster prevention, management and response.
