CCCCC Update Highlights SIDS’ Calls for Action on Climate

The September newsletter of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) highlights calls by representatives of small island States for urgent climate change mitigation and adaptation action.

It also reports on a speech by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urging world leaders to show greater commitment to successful global negotiations on limiting greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and strengthening adaptation measures.

CCCCC4 October 2011: The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) has published the September 2011 edition of its Climate Change News Update. The edition contains a summary of major international and regional climate change-related news, highlighting calls by representatives of small island States for urgent action to mitigate climate change and to support the adaptation efforts of the poorest countries.

The 16th issue of the Update also reports on a speech by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Leaders’ Dialogue on Climate Change, held on the eve of the High-level Session of the 66th UN General Assembly (UNGA), urging world leaders to show greater commitment to successful global negotiations on limiting greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and strengthening adaptation measures.

Other news reported in the Update include: China’s plan to invest 2 trillion yuan (about US$313 billion) to promote a green, low-carbon economy in the next five years; the launch by the Maldives of a new website inviting experts from around the world to provide technical advice on low-carbon energy generation, storage and financing; the accreditation of new implementing entities by the Adaptation Fund Board; the publication by the UNFCCC Secretariat of the annotated agendas for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC, its subsidiary bodies, and the seventh session of the Conference of the Parties serving the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 7); and the launch of “The Economics of Climate Change in the Caribbean” summary report.
