CCAFS, IWMI Identify Global Flooding Hotspots
story highlights

The Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) of CGIAR and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) have used a dataset of over 3500 flood events to analyze flood trends and to inform where climate risk investments are needed.

12 October 2012: As the disaster risk reduction (DRR) and the climate change adaptation communities respond to the challenges posed by flooding events, two bodies under the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have joined to identify global flood hotspots and map flood risks using remote-sensing datasets.

The Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) of CGIAR and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) have used a dataset of over 3500 flood events to analyze flood trends and to inform where climate risk investments are needed. The programme has begun to overlay flood hotspots with agriculture and population data in order to better assess the possible extent of crop loss and affected populations by large-flood events.
