CBD Secretariat to Prepare Assessment of Links between Urbanization and Biodiversity

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has initiated preparation of an assessment of the links and opportunities between urbanization and biodiversity for the 11th meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties, by inviting parties to encourage sub-national governments, cities and local authorities to send to the Secretariat information on the application of the Singapore Index on Cities' Biodiversity.

CBD17 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has initiated preparation of an assessment of the links and opportunities between urbanization and biodiversity for the 11th meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties, by inviting parties to encourage sub-national governments, cities and local authorities to send the Secretariat information on the application of the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity.

The use of the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity, currently being tested by over 85 cities, is supported by the Plan of Action on Subnational Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities for Biodiversity 2011-2020, adopted by Decision X/22, along with local biodiversity surveys and assessments or similar mechanisms, as a means for local authorities to measure the state of their biodiversity and its management in line with the Convention’s 2011-2020 indicator framework.
