CBD Secretariat Invites Nominations for Regional LMO Workshop in Asia

The objective of the regional training of trainers workshop is to introduce participants to the requirements of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety regarding the identification and documentation of living modified organisms (LMOs) and to techniques and methodologies that may be used to ensure the implementation of these requirements.

CBD8 September 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited parties to the Biosafety Protocol to nominate experts for participation in a sub-regional workshop for the Asian region. The training of trainers workshop will focus on the identification and documentation of living modified organisms (LMOs). It will take place in New Delhi, India, from 21-25 November 2011.

The workshop is directed at customs officers, border control officials, sanitary and phytosanitary inspectors and other enforcement authorities, as well as policy makers and regulators. The objective is to provide an introduction to the Protocol’s requirements regarding LMO identification and documentation, as well as techniques and methodologies that may be used to ensure their implementation.

Asian parties are invited to nominate one expert per country who has relevant, practical experience in customs control or experience formulating or enforcing regulations or standards for the identification and detection of regulated goods and substances in general, and LMOs in particular. Participants are expected to make use of their acquired knowledge and skills in their current positions, and to train and share the knowledge and experience gained with their colleagues at home.
