CBD Secretariat Calls for Submissions on Synthetic Biology

In view of the establishment of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Synthetic Biology by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat calls for submissions on a number of issues related to synthetic biology and biodiversity.

CBD6 February 2015: In view of the establishment of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Synthetic Biology by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat calls for submissions on a number of issues related to synthetic biology and biodiversity.

Submissions are invited on issues including: how to address the relationship between synthetic biology and biological diversity; the similarities and differences between living modified organisms under the Biosafety Protocol and organisms, components and products of synthetic biology techniques; the adequacy of existing instruments; an international definition of synthetic biology; potential benefits and risks of organisms arising from synthetic biology and related human health and socioeconomic impacts; and best practices on risk assessment and monitoring regimes.
