CBD Secretariat Calls for Information on Incentive Measures

The information on incentive measures will be disseminated through the CBD clearing house mechanism and will be synthesized in a progress report for consideration by the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) at its 16th meeting.

18 January 2011: In accordance with Decision X/44 of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat is inviting information on activities related to incentive measures.

The information, to be provided by 5 January 2012, will be disseminated through the CBD clearing house mechanism and will be synthesized in a progress report for consideration by the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) at its 16th meeting.

Relevant activities include: mechanisms with a view to account for the values of biodiversity and ecosystem services in public and private decision-making; studies on the values of biodiversity and ecosystem services at the national level; identifying, eliminating, phasing out or reforming existing harmful incentives for sectors that can potentially affect biodiversity; promoting the design and implementation of positive incentive measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; engaging with businesses and enterprises on ways and means to contribute to the national implementation of the CBD; implementing sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns; building or enhancing national capacities for assessing the values of biodiversity and ecosystem services, for identifying and removing or mitigating perverse incentives, and for the design and implementation of positive incentive measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; and otherwise supporting efforts at global, regional and national levels to identify and remove or mitigate perverse incentives, promote positive incentives for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and to assess the values of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services.
