CBD16 October 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of a workshop on domestic and international biodiversity-related investments and impacts. The workshop report includes a compilation and review of methodologies and associated experiences intended to support Parties in their financial reporting under the Convention.

Organized in collaboration with the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the technical expert workshop aimed to provide a platform for sharing experiences assessing methodologies in other sectors, and identifying possible elements of a common methodology. It convened on 5-7 May 2015, in Mexico City, Mexico.

The report contains summaries of presentations and discussions on: international biodiversity-related investments and impacts; ex-post assessments of domestic biodiversity-related investments and impacts; ex ante analysis of planned investments and impacts; definitions of biodiversity-related investments; coefficients; the role of the private sector; assessing impacts in a finance context; harmful expenditures; the UN’s System for Environmental-Economic Accounting 2012 (SEEA) Framework; cost effectiveness; and assessing the contribution of collective action by indigenous peoples and local communities (ILCs).

The annex compiles and reviews methodologies and associated experiences in the context of the CBD’s Financial Reporting Framework, including full descriptions of the methodologies and approaches currently being used by CBD Parties and international finance institutions and initiatives, as well as references and classifications used in the document.

In a notification, the CBD Secretariat invites Parties to use the annex as voluntary guidance when reporting on domestic expenditures and the development of finance plans or resource mobilization strategies, by the end of 2015. The Secretariat also invites Parties to share new methodological developments and experiences, in order to update the Annex.
