CBD Launches Webpage on UN Decade on Biodiversity, Celebrations Begin

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has created a webpage on the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020, while launches of the decade have taken place for South-East Asia and Asia-Pacific.

The UN Decade on Biodiversity aims to support and promote implementation of the objectives of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its targets, and mainstream biodiversity at different levels.

May 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has created a webpage on the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020, while launches of the Decade have taken place in the Philippines for South-East Asia and in India for the Asia-Pacific region.

The CBD webpage includes video messages by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Global Environment Facility (GEF) Chief Executive Officer Monique Barbut and Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

For South-East Asia, the Decade was launched on 30 May 2011 by the President of the Philippines, Benigno S. Aquino III, who also issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring a National Decade. On 23 May 2011, India held in New Delhi the Asia-Pacific launch. Regional launches of the Decade will continue around the world, including in Havana, Cuba, on 4 July 2011 for the Caribbean region; in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 22 July 2011 for Africa; and in Costa Rica in October 2011 for Central America.
