21 January 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification encouraging Parties to initiate work as early as possible on the updating of the national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and the preparation of the fifth national report.

Recalling that the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the CBD urged Parties to develop national targets in line with the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and also to review their NBSAPs integrating the targets, the CBD Secretariat drew attention to the fact that the guidelines for the fifth national report are available in all UN languages on the Convention’s website.

A series of regional and sub-regional workshops will assist parties in updating their NBSAPs, including development of national targets. For eligible countries, funding is available from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to support both the development and updating of their NBSAPs and the preparation of the fifth national report.
