11 December 2008: On the occasion of International Mountain Day, celebrated on 11 December, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), delivered a message on food security in the mountains.

He noted that the global financial crisis threatens to perpetuate food
insecurity worldwide and stressed the particular vulnerability of
mountain people to food shortages due to their isolated, inaccessible
and remote location. He added that the mountain ecosystems are among
those most severely impacted by climate change, which further
