14 July 2008: On the occasion of the
Technical Workshop on Protected Areas in the Amazon, which took place from 14-16 July 2008 in Amacayacú National Park,
Colombia, the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ahmed Djoghlaf, outlined the benefits of reducing emissions from
deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) initiatives.
The event was organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Latin–American Network of Protected
Areas (REDPARQUES) and IUCN, and aimed to promote a regional dialogue on the
implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas and identify
conservation priorities at sub-regional levels. Djoghlaf underscored the importance of conserving tropical rainforests and noted that REDD initiatives have the potential to make
the conservation and sustainable use of forests more economically viable than
deforestation. He listed some of the benefits of these initiatives, including
mitigating climate change and providing economic goods and services. He
concluded by welcoming the inclusion of a reference to the 2010 biodiversity
target and REDD in this year’s G8 summit Declaration and the CBD’s Ninth
