The past and future CBD COP Presidencies confirmed the continued declining status of global biodiversity, and committed to increased implementation action to reverse this decline.
Their Call to Action will be forwarded to the UN General Assembly at its 66th session and to the high-level meeting of the Assembly on desertification, land degradation, and drought.
7 September 2011: Representatives of past and future Presidencies of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have issued a call for “urgent action on the implementation of the successful Nagoya Outcomes.”
The call was agreed and signed at the annual high-level meeting of CBD COP Presidents, held on 3 September 2011, in Chateau Bossey, Switzerland.
The Call for Action confirms the continued declining status of global biodiversity, and commits its signatories to increased implementation action to reverse this decline. It calls on Governments to, inter alia: sign and ratify, as soon as possible, the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS); develop and implement national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and adopt national and regional targets within the framework of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; consider convening a high-level event on biodiversity at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly (in 2015), on the occasion of the mid-term evaluation of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; and increase efforts towards achieving synergies among the three Rio Conventions – on biodiversity, climate change and desertification – in light of the interconnectivity of the issues.
