CARIBSAVE, CCRIF Announce Climate-Related Scholarships for Caribbean Nationals

CARIBSAVE - CCRIF23 February 2012: The CARIBSAVE Partnership (“CARIBSAVE”) and the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have announced postgraduate scholarships for Caribbean nationals for studies related to climate change.

Applications for the CARIBSAVE scholarships are due by 19 March 2012, and by 13 April 2012 for the CCRIF programme.

The CARIBSAVE announcement involves scholarships and bursaries at either the University of the West Indies, or the University of Waterloo, Canada, as part of its Partnership for Canada-Caribbean Community Climate Change Adaptation (ParCA) project sponsored by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). ParCA will conduct comparative case study research in Tobago, Jamaica and two Atlantic Canadian provinces, using use a community-based vulnerability assessment (CBVA) framework to identify vulnerabilities and exposures, and develop strategies for climate change adaptation.

Applicants for the CARIBSAVE scholarships and bursaries must have a degree in a climate change-related area, such as: climatology; geography; geomatics; environmental sciences; coastal management; water resources; sustainable tourism; and gender studies.

The CCRIF announcement involves its Extra-Regional Scholarship Programme intended to help Caribbean countries deepen their in-country expertise on natural hazards, catastrophe risk and the potential impacts of climate change.

The Programme is providing three scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year for Caribbean students pursuing Masters-level study at a university in Canada, the UK or the US in one of the following areas: disaster risk management; property/casualty insurance; disaster management; meteorology/climate change; and civil or environmental or building engineering with a disaster focus. Applicants must be a citizen of one of the 16 CCRIF member countries, namely: Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; the Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Bermuda; Cayman Islands; Dominica; Grenada; Haiti; Jamaica; St. Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

CARIBSAVE is a non-profit regional organization formed in 2008 by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the University of Oxford to address the socioeconomic impacts and challenges of climate change in the Caribbean Basin.
