16 October 2012: Caribbean energy experts met in advance of the annual Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), convening from 15-17 October, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Organized by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States, the meeting considered alternatives for electricity interconnections in the Caribbean Region.

According to the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), the event highlighted the need for island nations to build electricity linkages and increase regional energy security while facilitating the transfer of lower cost renewable energy power supplies. Discussions also underscored the potential for interconnection in the Caribbean to create larger, aggregated energy markets, which increase the viability of the development of large-scale renewable energy projects such as geothermal and wind.
