21 December 2016: The Government of Canada has delivered its documentation to re-accede to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Canada first acceded to the UNCCD in 1995, but formally withdrew in 2014.

Canada will become a full party 90 days after re-acceding, on 21 March 2017.

On the occasion of the delivery of Canada’s accession documents, Amb. Marc-André Blanchard, Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN, said, “The UNCCD is an inclusive body that brings together many diverse voices to tackle complex global issues. In re-acceding to the convention, Canada is taking concrete action to work with multilateral partners on these important challenges.” [Global Affairs Canada News Release]
