Canada Pledges Funding to GCF

he Government of Canada has announced it will commit CAD$300 million to the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The announcement was made ahead of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Lima, Peru, in December 2014, and just after the first GCF pledging conference, which took place in Berlin, Germany, on 20 November 2014.

The announcement was made ahead of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Lima, Peru, in December 2014, and just after the first GCF pledging conference, which took place in Berlin, Germany, on 20 November 2014.

GCF Executive Director Héla Cheikhrouhou said that Canada’s significant pledge is well timed, coming just a week before Lima.

The announcement brings total pledges of contributions to the GCF close to US$ 9.6 billion equivalent, provided by 22 countries.

In a press release, Canadian Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq said the pledge demonstrates Canada’s “commitment to establish a fair, effective international agreement” in Paris that includes binding obligations on all major emitters.
