CAN to Strengthen Environmental Information on the Peruvian Amazon

The Andean Community (CAN) Secretariat has signed an agreement with a Peruvian institute to play a central role in building the Amazon Regional Information Platform (PIRAA) for CAN's biodiversity programme, BioCAN.

22 March 2012: The Andean Community (CAN) Secretariat signed an agreement with the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP) to strengthen the management of environmental information in the Peruvian Amazon.

The agreement was signed on 22 March 2012, by CAN Secretary General Adalid Contreras Baspineiro and IIAP Director Luis Campos Baca. The CAN-IIAP agreement is part of the Community’s biodiversity programme, BioCAN, and is intended to play a central role in building BioCAN’s Amazon Regional Information Platform (PIRAA).

Under the agreement, IIAP, with guidance from Peru’s Environment Ministry, will seek to strengthen management of Amazonian biodiversity information, strengthen environmental and geographic information, develop new information products, provide training activities and strengthen related technological infrastructure.

BioCAN, created in 2007 with funding from Finland, and in its second phase since June 2010, has the mission of contributing to the quality of life of CAN member countries in their Tropical Andes-Amazonian Regions “through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in an equitable manner respectful of cultural diversity.” [CAN Press Release (Spanish)] [IISD RS Article on PIRAA]
