Clean Energy Ministerial30 September 2014: The UK has launched an initiative, dubbed POWERful Women (PfW), geared toward ensuring that women make up 40% of middle management and 30% of board members in UK energy companies by 2030. PfW is being supported by the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative.

Initiated by Baroness Verma, UK Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, and Laura Sandys, Member of Parliament, PfW advances C3E’s efforts to boost national government action. According to Sandys, the PfW is creating a new generation of “powerful” women through engagement with experts and companies and by encouraging a fundamental change in business model.

The PfW targets the entire energy sector, from exploration, generation, transmission and distribution services, to the realms of energy efficiency, technology and government. The programme will help connect professional women interested in the energy field with industry leaders, support their professional development and help companies create opportunities for female leadership.

C3E is an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) that aims to advance the position of women in the field of clean energy. The UK is a founding member of the C3E initiative. [CEM Press Release] [POWERful Women Website]
