Carlos Nobre, Brazil's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), said in the wake of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Brazil is committed to directing its policies towards sustainable development, and views the association with GBIF as a sign of the importance of knowledge for the management of natural resources.
30 October 2012: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) annnounced that Brazil has joined GBIF.
Brazil signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GBIF, committing it to setting up a national node to coordinate publication of biodiversity data. Brazil joins GBIF initially as an Associate Participant, meaning it will not make afinancial contribution to the global GBIF budget nor hold a vote in the Governing Board, but commits to moving towards voting participation within five years. Through its association with GBIF, Brazil aims to establish an interface with the Information System for Brazilian Biodiversity and Ecosystems (SIB-Br), a project in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF). [GBIF Press Release]
