A booklet on the UN Development Programme's (UNDP) Community Water Initiative (CWI) highlights results in the areas of water and sanitation, livelihoods, health and environment.
Looking beyond 2012, the booklet notes that GEF-SGP will support water and sanitation projects in small island developing States (SIDS), which can be used to increase CWI outcomes, and emphasizes the importance of meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
30 August 2012: A booklet issued by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on the Community Water Initiative (CWI) discusses: CWI approaches; results and impacts; replication, upscaling and sustainability; the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) – effective delivery mechanism; partnerships; and beyond 2012.
The booklet, titled “CWI – Adaptive Community Water Initiative: Delivering Water and Sanitation to Poor Communities,” underscores that the approaches of the CWI are community based, climate resilient and pro-poor.
Highlighting CWI results to date, the booklet identifies improved access to water and sanitation, such as reduction in the distance to fetch water, and livelihood impacts such as direct services to poor and marginalized communities including women. Health impacts of CWI projects include improvements in cleanliness and reduced disease incidence due to awareness-raising. Environmental impacts include enhanced capacity for local communities to adapt to climate change.
