story highlights

The paper examines how changes in the legislative environment, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity's recognition of States' rights to control access to biological diversity in their territories, have threatened to restrict the flow of plant genetic resources.

"In Trust Agreements" attempt to ensure that CGIAR genebank collections remain available for the benefit of the world community.

24 March 2011: Bioversity International has released a publication assessing the impacts of “in trust agreements” on the International Rice Collection at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).The paper examines how changes in the legislative environment have threatened to restrict the flow of plant genetic resources.

These changes are based on the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which recognizes the rights of states to control access to biological diversity in their territories. Following the implementation of the CBD, “In Trust Agreements” were established by Bioversity in 1994 to provide a legal framework for the 11 genebank collections maintained by the institutions of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), in order to ensure that the collections remain available for the benefit of the world community.

Bioversity International is a member of the CGIAR. [Publication: An Assessment of the In Trust Agreements on IRRI Germplasm and Distribution]
