Bioversity International Launches Online Learning Tool on ITPGR Implementation

The training module includes lecture notes, practical exercises and presentations to develop the knowledge and skills of genebank managers, technical policy advisors and educators with a focus on implementing the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR).

14 December 2010: Bioversity International, a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has published an online learning tool on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR).

The training module aims to develop the knowledge and skills of ITPGR implementation for genebank managers, technical policy advisors and educators. It includes elements on: the ITPGR’s significance and its main elements; its multilateral system for access and benefit-sharing (ABS); relationship with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); identifying which ABS regime applies to individual cases of germplasm accession; and understanding the ITPGR’s standard material transfer agreement. The module contains background lecture notes, presentations, practical exercises on the impact of ITPGR law in typical situations, references to the full text of relevant laws and policies and a bibliography for further reading.
