bioversity-icraf24 December 2014: Bioversity International and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) have published descriptors defining key characteristics of the Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata L.) in order to facilitate access to data for conservation and management of this multipurpose species.

The publication, titled ‘Descriptors for Baobab,’ provides data in categories used by curators of gene bank collections to document accessions of genetic resources and provide essential information for their conservation and sustainable use, including “passport, management, environment and site, and characterization” descriptors.

Baobab is a multipurpose food tree used in semi-arid and sub-humid zones of sub-Saharan Africa. It provides raw and processed food products and is increasingly important as an income generating crop for small-scale farming in the region.

The publication was developed by Bioversity International and ICRAF, both members of the CGIAR consortium, with support by the Fruiting Africa Project, funded by the EU Commission. [Publication: Baobab Descriptors][Bioversity International News]
