12 October 2010: The fourth meeting of the Group of Friends of the Co-Chairs on Liability and Redress in the context of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety reached agreement on outstanding issues with regard to the draft supplementary protocol on liability and redress, namely financial security, the definition of “LMOs and products thereof” and the preamble.

The meeting was held from 6-11 October 2010, in Nagoya, Japan, immediately prior to the fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP/MOP 5). Originally scheduled for three days, the meeting was extended throughout the weekend with informal consultations continuing into the night on Sunday. A legal drafting group was established during the first day of COP/MOP 5 to revise the supplementary protocol text for clarity and consistency. [IISD RS coverage of the negotiations]
