7 March 2013: The Africa Water Facility (AWF) has handed over a water supply and sanitation project to the Chitungwiza municipality in Zimbabwe. The AWF project aims to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) of the Chitungwiza inhabitants, who have experienced cholera epidemics and typhoid outbreaks since 2008.

The project, which was launched in January 2012 and completed in February 2013, focused on stabilizing water and sanitation services, as well as enhancing institutional capacity to operate and manage water supply and sewerage services. The project improved water availability and access by drilling boreholes and placing bush pumps. It also addressed sewage blockages and overflows by installing new house collector sewers. The system is now better equipped to remove sewage and provide drinkable water to residential areas, according to AWF.

The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) leads the AWF to mobilize water resources financing and development activities in Africa. The African Development Bank (AfDB) hosts the Facility. [AWF Press Release] [Project Document]
