The 21 Signatory States of the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia (IOSEA) Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding gathered for their third meeting on Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand from 29–31 March 2005. The meeting concluded with agreement on a regional “Year of the Turtle” public awareness campaign for 2006. Other highlights of the meeting included: the signing of the memorandum by Indonesia; adoption of two resolutions on fisheries by-catch and post-tsunami development activities; endorsement of a Secretariat proposal to intensify linkages with regional fisheries management bodies; and a review of the most comprehensive analysis yet undertaken of the measures put in place by Signatory States to conserve marine turtles and their habitats.
Concluded under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species, the IOSEA Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding aims to protect, conserve, replenish and recover marine turtles and their habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asian region.
