A Workshop to Support Asian Countries Reporting on DDT Production and Use convened from 22-24 July 2008, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention, the Workshop: reviewed existing data reporting mechanisms for pesticide management; identified data reporting constraints and made recommendations to strengthen such mechanisms; assessed existing vector control operations within the context of sustainable alternatives to DDT; and identified constraints to the implementation of such alternatives and recommended on how best to address those constraints. Participants recommended strengthening national and regional capacity for vector resistance monitoring and promoting and implementing integrated vector management (IVM). They also suggested that the WHO South East Asian Regional Office (SEARO) create a regional network to monitor the human and environmental impact of pesticides used for disease vector control. The Workshop also proposed Global Environment Facility funding for: needs assessments for disease vector control; developing/updating national policy and legislation for disease vector control and IVM, including insecticides used in public health; and repackaging and disposal of obsolete DDT stocks and wastes and decontamination of storage facilities.
