The ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins (ASB) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) have released two sets of publications on safeguard information systems for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries) and on fostering private sector engagement in the REDD+ supply chain.
31 October 2012: As part of a collaboration on building policy capacity on REDD+ of developing country negotiators, the ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins (ASB) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) have released two sets of publications ahead of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC.
The first set of publications address safeguard information systems for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries). The second set focuses on fostering private sector engagement in the REDD+ supply chain. Both sets of publication are the result of desk research, in-country interviews, and regional expert meetings.
The work on safeguard information systems examines: eight existing systems that could feed into reporting on REDD+ safeguards; how existing systems ensure transparency, consistency, flexibility and country-driven processes; as well as early action in Ethiopia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania and Viet Nam. The work suggests that effective safeguard information systems do not necessarily require new mechanisms, methodologies or indicators.
On private sector engagement in the REDD+ supply chain, IISD/ASB map out the roles that key private sector actors play in REDD+ and their motivations and interventions. They also describe current private sector challenges for engagement in REDD+ and opportunities for overcoming some of these barriers.
