3 March 2011: The Republic of Armenia became the 115th party to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) on 1 March 2011.

Since the re-establishment of Armenia as an independent State in 1991, it has engaged in extensive work to conserve and sustainably manage its natural heritage at the national and international level. At least 60% of its flora and fauna is currently protected and it has ratified 11 international environmental conventions including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

Through its accession to CMS, Armenia hopes to extend its international cooperation network, enhancing coordination and maximizing the impact of conservation and management activities using scarce human and financial resources. [CMS Press Release]
