5 November 2010: The first All-Africa Energy Week (AAEW) took place in Maputo, Mozambique, from 1-5 November 2010, on the theme “Energy Infrastructure and Services in the Context of Climate Challenges.”
The event, co-organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), was held in conjunction with the Pan African Investment Forum and the AU Conference of African Energy Ministers. It focused on clean energy for sustainable development, with the objective of contributing to: achieving more efficient, coherent and coordinated actions towards increasing energy access and developing Africa’s energy sector in Africa; and accelerating progress in scaling up investments in the African energy sector.
The AAEW comprised plenary and breakout sessions, side events and a ministerial round-table on a variety of topics and themes, including: energy infrastructure and services in the context of climatic challenges; financing energy infrastructure and services; institutional, regulatory and knowledge capacities; renewable energy and energy efficiency for scaling up energy access; clean energy technology and innovation for new solutions; and promotion of private sector participation and investment in infrastructure. In addition, an exhibition of clean energy technologies and services for poverty reduction and sustainable development was held.
