A regional workshop on improving forest law compliance and governance in tropical West Africa convened in Accra, Ghana, from 15-17 July 2008.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and hosted by the Ghana Forestry Commission, was attended by 62 representatives of governments, civil society, private companies, and regional and international organizations. Participants analyzed the problems and possible solutions related to illegal extraction of forest resources and governance in the management of forest ecosystems in the region. The meeting produced an “Accra Declaration,” which contains the workshop’s findings and recommendations.
