The African regional meeting on "Climate Change: Impacts, Adaptation and Development in Mountain Regions" focused on the increasing challenges and opportunities in sustainable development of mountain regions.
Participants stressed the need for capacity building and the importance of the Rio+20 Conference.
21 November 2011: Experts from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe recently discussed the increasing challenges and opportunities involved in the sustainable development of mountain regions.
The meeting on “Climate Change: Impacts, Adaptation and Development in Mountain Regions,” which took place from 16-18 November 2011, in Mbale, Uganda, was organized by organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with the support of the World Bank Development Grant Facility.
The meeting focused on the increasing challenges and opportunities in sustainable development of mountain regions. Participants stressed the need for capacity building and the importance of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The conference included field trips to two villages on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Uganda.
The meeting is the last of a series of three regional meetings on adaptation and development in mountain regions hosted by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat. The meeting for the Latin America region took place from 26-28 October 2011, in Santiago, Chile, and the meeting for the Central Asia region took place from 9-11 November 2011, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
