African Union (AU)3 February 2014: In an effort to urge the private mining sector to play a stronger role in promoting sustainable development, a collection of multilateral organizations are hosting the Africa Mining Vision Day on the sidelines of the Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

The day will focus on the implementation of the African Union’s African Mining Vision, which seeks to ensure that economic and social development accompany mining investments. The Vision recognizes that a quarter of Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) is based on extractive resources and that there is a need for mining revenue to be reinvested in future growth as well as a need for the development of more effective public-private partnerships.

The African Union Commission (AUC), African Minerals Development Centre and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) are hosting the Africa Mining Vision Day in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). This same group of organizations launched the African Minerals Development Centre in December 2013 to implement the Africa Mining Vision. The Centre will provide experts and researchers to help countries, businesses and civil society institutions implement the Vision.
