FAO22 February 2013: A new trust fund aimed at strengthening food security in Africa by drawing on resources from the continent has secured a donation of $30 million from Equatorial Guinea. The Africa Solidarity Trust Fund is administered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and will support Africa-led, Africa-owned initiatives like the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) to boost agricultural productivity in the region.

The first donation to the Fund was officially made at the third Africa-South America Summit held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The Trust Fund may also explore options for involving civil society, the private sector, academia and other partners. Other African countries, including Angola, are anticipated to provide funding in the near future.
