AfDB Supports Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Improvements in Zanzibar

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a grant of US$ 21 million to support the upgrading and rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructure in the Ungija municipality, Zanzibar.

It is expected that the project, which will benefit 40% of Zanzibar's population, will have concomitant health benefits and increase the number of socioeconomic activities undertaken on the island.

AfDB20 December 2012: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved financing to improve water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the Ungija municipality, Zanzibar.

The US$21 million financing project will improve the living standards and ensure sustainable, reliable and equitable water and sanitation services through the rehabilitating and upgrading of current infrastructure, with a particular focus on schools in the municipality. It is expected that the project, which will benefit 40% of Zanzibar’s population, will have concomitant health benefits and increase the number of socioeconomic activities undertaken on the island. AfDB will also provide capacity to support the project.
