AfDB Supports Tunisian Wastewater Treatment Project

In light of increasing water scarcity, the Tunisian Government plans to mobilize the equivalent of 132 million cubic meters of treated water per year, in order to irrigate 25,000 hectares.

The financing is granted by the AfDB in the framework of Tunisia's strategy for integrated management of water resources.

AfDB11 January 2012: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of 64.45 million Tunisian Dinars (€32.45 million) for a wastewater treatment project. The project aims to improve the quality of waste water that will serve for the irrigation of 5,000 hectares of agricultural land.

According to AfDB, agriculture is an important activity of the Tunisian economy and contributes to food security. In light of increasing water scarcity, the Government of Tunis plans to mobilize the equivalent of 132 million cubic meters of treated water per year, in order to irrigate 25,000 hectares.
