AfDB Supports Gas-fired Power Plant in Cameroon
story highlights

The AfDB has approved a loan of Euro 45 million for the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Cameroon.

The new plant, planned to address the rapidly increasing demand for energy, will allow for more reliable electricity supply due to less dependence on hydropower, which dominates Cameroon's energy mix.

15 July 2011: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a Euro 45 million loan for the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Cameroon to address increased energy demand, which has been growing by 6% annually from increased rural electricity access in addition to the expected population increase.

This joint venture between the Government and AES Kribi Holding BV will ensure reliable energy supply during the dry season as it will operate at higher production levels when hydropower, which supplies 77% of Cameroon’s power needs, becomes less certain. Additionally, the plant will replace plans to build other inefficient thermal power plants, thus having a lower environmental impact. [AfDB Press Release]
