14 August 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced it is assisting China in developing a carbon capture and storage (CCS) roadmap. The roadmap is intended to assist the country in achieving its carbon dioxide emission reduction goals.

A detailed plan for a staged demonstration and deployment of CCS will be developed under a US$2.2 million grant, financed by the ADB-administered Carbon Capture and Storage Fund under the Clean Energy Financing Partnership Facility. The Fund was established in 2009 through the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, and is supported by UK Government funding.

ADB will also support the assessment of the potential role of oxy-fuel combustion carbon dioxide capture, one of the three available carbon dioxide capture technologies. ADB activities are also expected to launch at least two large-scale CCS demonstration projects in China by 2016, with an installed capacity to capture at least two million tons of carbon dioxide per year.
