ADB25 April 2013: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) presented the outcomes of emergency assistance provided to Tajikistan in 2005 in response to flooding in the Khatlon Province, through two loans, the Agriculture Rehabilitation Project and the Irrigation Rehabilitation Project.

According to ADB, Tajikistan is one of the more vulnerable countries in the world to increasing temperatures and climate change.

The ADB funds were used for rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Pyanj River embankments, as well as the Dekhkanabad and Chubek canals. ADB also provided a $22 million dollar loan in 2007 for the Khatlon Flood Risk Management Project, which helped construct flood protection embankments and spur dikes. Other measures facilitated by the project included flood warning systems, flood-risk maps and public awareness. [ADB Press Release]
