15 August 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released its annual flagship statistical publication, titled “Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific 2012.” The publication, which includes a special chapter on Green Urbanization in Asia, examines the challenges and opportunities associated with the region’s urban boom, detailing measures required to transform cities into sustainable centres of growth.

According to the report, Asia must act now and move towards resource-friendly cities, or face an environmentally degraded future. The report underscores the need to address the increasing pollution, slums, urban carbon dioxide emissions, as well as economic and social inequities. It highlights the potential of conservation and energy improvements, such as energy efficient buildings and sustainable transport systems. It also draws attention to the success of congestion charging in Singapore and the removal of fuel subsidies in Indonesia.

The report underscores the need to mainstream green technologies such as waste-to-energy conversions plants, and “smart” electric grids.
