The solar project will generate 613 megawatt hours of electricity per year, running a portion of the Bank's air conditioning, lighting, and computer systems, resulting in the reduction of the ADB's carbon footprint.
5 June 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has installed solar panels on the rooftop of its headquarters located in Manila, the Philippines, in an effort to provide clean, renewable energy to the ADB office.
According to ADB, the 2,040 photovoltaic panels occupy 6,640 square meters on the roof of ADB’s main building. The solar project will generate 613 megawatt hours of electricity per year, running a portion of the Bank’s air conditioning, lighting, and computer systems, resulting in the reduction of the ADB’s carbon footprint.
The installation complements ADB’s investment in clean energy across Asia, and its efforts to improve energy efficiency in its own building. In 2011, ADB headquarters received the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold rating from the US Green Building Council, making it the first building in the Philippines to be awarded LEED certification for an existing structure.
