25 January 2010: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced that it will provide a US$0.7 million grant, financed by the Government of Japan, to build the capacity of Bhutan’s National Environment Commission for developing mitigation and adaptation measures that can counter climate change.
The project will also boost the ability of Bhutan to adequately assess and promote hydropower and other renewable energy projects suitable for participating in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol, and for potential carbon trading. The ADB underlines that there is considerable scope for tapping the CDM as Bhutan and India – the main purchaser of Bhutan’s electricity exports – are planning more hydropower projects, with combined output of about 10,000 megawatts. The assistance will be coordinated with the work of other civil society groups and donors, including the Danish International Development Assistance, Japan International Cooperation Agency and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
