The article outlines the efforts of ACP MEAs project through its CDM component implemented by the UNEP Risø Centre, to support twelve ACP countries (Angola, Belize, Botswana, Cuba, Fiji, Côte d'Ivoire, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Trinidad and Tobago and, Vanuatu) to fully engage in the global carbon market by providing technical and financial support to identify, design, approve, finance, implement, monitor and promote CDM projects.
September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission have released the latest issue of the newsletter on the Multilateral Environment Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP MEAs) Project. The newsletter features a guest article by Mette Annelie Rasmussen and Miriam Hinostroza, UNEP Risø Centre, outlining efforts to “level the playing field” for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and carbon finance.

The newsletter also contains information on recently-completed activities in the African, Caribbean and Pacific project hubs. Activities implemented at the African Hub, housed at the African Union Commission (AUC), include: the convening of a workshop to sensitize Parliamentarians on the importance of mainstreaming MEAs into development policies and plans; and the signing of an agreement between UNEP and WWF to develop regulatory frameworks on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to better regulate the entry, application and handling of POPs in Uganda and Burundi.
At the Pacific Hub, housed at the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), activities include: the convening of national negotiation skills workshops in Nauru and Tuvalu; and a second workshop in Fiji on the topic of UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) National Action Programme alignment.
The Caribbean Hub, housed at the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), convened a pilot training workshop on MEAs Enforcement for Customs Officials and Border Control Personnel in the Dominican Republic, and launched a regional internship programme.
