Parties to the UNECE Aarhus Convention on access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters have adopted an amendment to the Convention extending the rights of the public to participate in decision-making on GMOs.

At the second meeting of Parties to the Aarhus Convention, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 25-27 May 2005, delegates also adopted a decision on applying the Aarhus principles in other international environmental forums. In addition, Parties considered and upheld the findings of the Compliance Committee that three countries – Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine – had failed to comply with certain provisions of the Convention. During a high-level segment, the meeting reiterated its invitation to non-ECE member States to accede to the Convention.
