World Toilet Day 2023 focuses on the opportunity to address access to safely managed sanitation by taking individual and institutional action. The 2023 theme, ‘Accelerating Change,’ uses the image of a hummingbird to inspire people to take action to improve toilets and sanitation systems.
Currently, 3.5 billion people live without safe toilets, and 419 million people practice open defecation. Armed conflict and violence exacerbate these situations, impacting the environment and human health, particularly for women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.
The UN organizes World Toilet Day annually on November 19. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) coordinate the Day.
