World Migratory Bird Day 2025 will focus on the theme, ‘Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities’. The theme highlights the need for a healthy coexistence between birds and humans and the opportunities to create and adapt environments that support migratory bird populations across all communities, from cities to smaller towns and communities.
World Migratory Bird Day aims to raise awareness on the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. The Day draws attention to the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. The 2025 theme will emphasize the challenges migratory birds face from human activities and expanding urban development and advocate for strategic urban planning and conservation efforts that incorporate bird-friendly practices.
The Day is celebrated biannually on the second Saturday in May and in October, reflecting the cyclical nature of bird migration with varying migration periods in the northern and southern hemispheres. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), Environment for the Americas (EFTA), and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) organize the Day’s campaign.
