The virtual consultation on the zero draft of the Pact for the Future, expected to be adopted at the Summit of the Future in September, will allow Major Groups and other Stakeholders (MGoS) and civil society representatives the opportunity to share their views on the draft. The consultation will also provide an opportunity for Member States to share their visions and priorities for the Pact directly with MGoS and civil society.
The Summit for the Future will bring together UN Member States, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), academic institutions, the private sector, and youth under the theme, ‘Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’. Originally proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his ‘Our Common Agenda’ report, the Summit aims to forge a new global consensus on what our future should look like, and what we can do today to secure it.
Member States and Permanent Observers concluded the second reading of the zero draft of the Pact for the Future on 3 April. Before proceeding with a revised text of the Pact for the Future, the co-facilitators decided to convene this virtual consultation to exchange views with MGoS and civil society and provide an update on the intergovernmental negotiations. The consultation aims to enhance interaction and promote a direct exchange of ideas among delegations, MGoS, and civil society, reinforcing the process’s principles of inclusivity and transparency. In a letter dated 8 April 2024, the co-facilitators emphasized their view that integrating civil society input “enriches the outcomes of the Summit” and keeps our “commitment to inclusivity and partnership”.
