UNCTAD Public Symposium: A Better World Economic Order for Equality and Sustainable Development Post-2015

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is organizing the 2014 Public Symposium, titled 'A Better World Economic Order for Equality and Sustainable Development Post-2015,' with the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) and other partner organizations. The Symposium will explore the challenges widening inequality poses to sustainable development through two main themes. The theme on ‘Macroeconomic dimensions of inequality' will examine: growing inequality between and within nations; the contribution of inequalities to the accumulation of global imbalances and the 2008 financial crisis; ways in which measures taken to tackle the crisis have worsened inequalities; and reforms that would contribute to more sustainable and equitable forms of sustainable development. The second theme, ‘Best policy practices to global transformation,' will discuss policy measures that countries and regions have taken to address growing inequality and its related challenges, including partnerships to replicate and scale up best practices. Participants are also expected to consider UNCTAD's role in the implementation of the post-2015 agenda. Symposium events include: the Third Geneva Dialogue, a series of events where Geneva trade hub experts will debate global economic issues and the post-2015 agenda; interactive plenaries; and breakout sessions. The Symposium will take place on UNCTAD's 50th anniversary.
